Public treatment services
District psychiatric centre (DPS)
If you are struggling with a serious mental disorder, you will most likely be entitled to necessary healthcare from the public health service. Such healthcare can then be obtained at your local district psychiatric centre (DPS), which is part of the state-run hospitals or hospitals that have agreements with the state. This is also called the specialist health service or second-line service. This treatment is free, or almost free in that you may be asked to pay a co-payment up to an annual maximum corresponding to the free card threshold. You must contact your GP for a referral to a DPS.
Privately practising contracted specialists
Privately practising specialist psychologists and privately practising psychiatrists with operating agreements with the health regions form part of the public mental health services within the specialist health service. Here too you must pay co-payments up to an annual maximum corresponding to the free card threshold. You must contact your GP for a referral for treatment with a privately practising specialist psychologist or a privately practising psychiatrist. There may be waiting lists for treatment with these contracted specialists.
Municipal services
Some municipalities have well-developed low-threshold services in mental health care, in addition to application-based mental health services. Together with GPs, the municipalities form the primary health service or first-line service. Contact your municipality for information about such services.
Acute and serious crises
In completely acute and serious mental crises outside office hours, patients must seek the emergency medical service (legevakt) for help. The telephone number for the local emergency medical service is 116 117. Here the patient will be examined by a doctor, and the doctor will assess the need for admission to a psychiatric inpatient unit at a DPS, for example at Dr. Høsts vei inpatient section in Bærum, or to an acute psychiatric ward, for example at Blakstad Hospital. Here patients will be well cared for and receive good treatment in accordance with the disorder and severity.
